Very large antique bronze letterbox plate, a very rare early 20th Century item
A very large antique bronze vertical letterbox front plate. The opening flap is larger than a normal modern domestic version and will easily accommodate the large letter envelope size. Undoubtedly rare in this size and format, this large plate would be an ideal solution for a large period door where a bigger aperture is required, or it could be used in a bespoke situation incorporated into a wall, cupboard or parcel box. The letterbox was probably originally intended for a commercial building such as a Post Office, bank, solicitor's office, factory etc but could also be used in the recreation of an early Post Office display. The plate has the word'letters' at the top and has six countersunk holes for fixing. Condition: very original condition overall with a deep patina, the bronze may never have been cleaned and has mellowed to a desirable colour.

The white lettering appears to be original. The flap spring is original and functional. The plate is convex by a couple of millimetres but will pull back flat to a surface when screwed in place. The finish has some verdigris, light marks and scuffs.

Dimensions: Height: 49.5 cm (19-1/2") Width: 23.5 cm (9-1/4"). Frame depth: 0.6 cm (1/4). Aperture height: 34.2 cm (13-1/2). Aperture width: 5 cm (2). Weight: 3829 g Stock number: AC1727.
