Mdina glass was founded in the late summer of 1968 by Michael Harris, a former graduate then teacher, with the Royal London College of Art. The name Mdina was chosen because, one, it was the ancient capital of Malta, and two, it wasn't an anglicised name, hence it associated the glass with the location and not a person. Under Michael's leadership, the Mdina glass company produced Mediterranean free formed, organic in style glassware, inspired by their location, (sand, sea, sky and earth) which became extremely popular with tourists visiting Malta.
Unfortunately, in the summer of 1972 Michael Harris was required to leave Malta due to a new labour government, negotiating the closure/expulsion of British and foreign military presences and also foreign nationals with annual work permits. Michael Harris is today regarded as one of the most influential glass artists of the 20th Century and his work is now highly collected, valued and admired the world over. Whoever buys this truly beautiful piece of rare, Michael Harris Mdina glass, will not be disappointed, because it's just so striking.
